Data Research (New York or Remote)

The Department of Operational Support (DOS) at the United Nations, accordingly, is looking for a Data Research Intern to join the Office of Supply Chain Management (OSCM). This is, therefore, a unique opportunity to become a full member of our team. You will work on impactful projects that, consequently, make a significant difference to OSCM and the wider UN mission.

Our office handles a broad range of services, including supply chain planning, procurement, and logistics for nearly 100 client entities globally. The ideal intern, as a result, is a proactive and detail-oriented individual who can help our teams analyze data, identify opportunities, and contribute to evidence-based solutions.

This internship is available for a duration of 3–6 months. We offer flexible work arrangements; for example, you can choose an in-person placement in New York or a fully remote role. Furthermore, you can choose to work either full-time or part-time.

Responsibilities of the Data Research Intern

As a Data Research Intern, you will handle a variety of key tasks. To illustrate, you will:

  • Analyze Data: Gather data from various sources, perform statistical and mathematical programming, and then use software like Microsoft SQL, PowerBI, Tableau, or Qlik to interpret results.

  • Manage Data: Support teams with cleaning data from primary and secondary sources, and also maintain databases and data systems.

  • Visualize & Report: Create simple data visualizations and, in addition, translate complex data results into clear, written reports or presentations for management.

  • Improve Processes: Assist in identifying opportunities for innovative approaches and contribute to the development of data science solutions.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for this internship, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • You are currently enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s or equivalent).

  • You are in your final academic year of a university degree program (Bachelor’s or equivalent).

  • You have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined above).

We welcome a wide range of academic backgrounds; however, we typically seek candidates with coursework in Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Visualization, or Analytics.

Other key requirements include:

  • No prior work experience is necessary; in fact, your education and skills are what matter.

  • Fluency in English is required. Additionally, knowledge of another official UN language is a plus.

  • Knowledge of data analysis tools is highly desirable.

 

Additional Information

This is an unpaid internship. The UN is not responsible for expenses related to travel, visas, accommodation, or living costs. Consequently, interns must obtain the necessary visa and work authorization if they are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country.
