About the International Justice Program Internship
The HRW intern role within the International Justice Program (IJP) provides a unique opportunity to contribute to HRW’s legal and advocacy work. The program closely monitors international judicial developments, especially those related to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Therefore, you will engage in high-level legal research, media monitoring, and policy analysis. The Fall 2025 internship will run from mid/late September through early/mid December, with a weekly commitment of 16–18 hours.

Key Responsibilities for the HRW IJP Intern
Your key responsibilities will include:

Conducting in-depth legal research and analysis on international criminal law and global accountability mechanisms.

Monitoring and summarizing media coverage, academic literature, and legal developments related to international courts and tribunals.

Preparing internal briefing notes, legal memos, and advocacy materials to support HRW’s campaigns.

Assisting in the drafting of policy analysis documents, opinion pieces, and public-facing materials.

Participating in virtual and in-person workshops, seminars, and meetings with senior HRW staff.
Qualifications for this International Justice Internship
Education:

United States: You must be a current graduate student (e.g., JD, LLM, or Master’s in a relevant field).

Belgium: You must be a current student or recent graduate of an accredited law or master’s program.
Experience:

You should have a demonstrated academic background in international law, human rights law, or criminal justice.

Furthermore, you must possess strong legal research and writing skills.

Specifically, fluency in French is highly desirable, given its use as an official language by the ICC.
Compensation & Application

U.S. Interns: HRW offers a paid hourly rate of $17.00 USD. Interns are also entitled to prorated paid vacation days.

Belgium Interns: Current students must provide proof of external funding. Recent graduates receive a monthly stipend of EUR 1,055.94, and HRW also reimburses lunch and local travel expenses.
