About the International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a Digital Community Engagement Intern to support its work in the U.S. Founded in 1933, the IRC responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities to survive and rebuild their lives. The Documented.Info Digital Engagement Project

The IRC partners with Documented, a nonprofit newsroom, on the Documented.Info project. This collaborative platform, consequently, connects immigrant communities in New York City with essential services. The platform provides accessible, accurate, and up-to-date information in multiple languages.

This internship offers an immersive, hands-on experience in community-centered digital service delivery and communication. Therefore, it is ideal for students and recent graduates who are passionate about immigrant rights, journalism, or public service. As the Digital Community Engagement Intern, you will assist with digital outreach, service mapping, content creation, and platform maintenance, working in a joint capacity with both the Documented and IRC teams.

 

 

Responsibilities of the Digital Community Engagement Intern

  • Service Mapping & Engagement

    • Help identify legal, housing, education, and social service providers for immigrant communities in NYC.

    • Furthermore, conduct outreach to community-based organizations.

    • In addition, assist with verifying and updating service entries on the Documented.Info service map.

  • Content Creation & Writing

    • Work with a Communities editor to draft and edit articles, how-to guides, and FAQs in plain language.

    • Subsequently, create infographics or visual explainers for service-related content.

    • Additionally, assist with scriptwriting and caption writing for videos and social media posts.

    • Help maintain Documented.Info’s social channels.

  • Case Support

    • Assist the Asylum Team with orientations and intake processes.

    • Research possible client referrals.

    • Help caseworkers with documentation and survey collection.

 

Requirements for the Digital Support Intern

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or have U.S. work authorization and reside in the U.S.

  • You must be a current student or a recent graduate (within the past two years) of a post-secondary institution.

  • A strong interest in immigrant rights, community outreach, and digital communication is required.

  • You must have experience using social media platforms (Facebook & Instagram) and content creation tools.

  • Moreover, excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong attention to detail, are essential.

  • Likewise, you must be able to work independently in a remote setting while collaborating across teams.

  • You can have any degree; however, journalism majors or individuals with reporting, editorial, or writing experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Above all, you must be proficient in Spanish, French, or Haitian Creole. Proficiency in other languages used by refugees and asylum seekers is also accepted.
